The Swedish Air Force is working with Saab to cut Gripen rearm and refuel turnaround times to under 10 minutes, tightening the fighter’s rapid sortie cycle and supporting dispersed operations from road bases and other austere locations. The effort centres on improving combat persistence and survivability for Sweden’s Gripen fleet as the country expands its NATO role.
Gripen has long been associated with short turnaround and low-support operations, but the new target pushes that concept further by demanding even faster rearming and refuelling between missions. The focus is operational readiness rather than procurement, with the Swedish Air Force aiming to generate more sorties while reducing the time aircraft spend exposed on the ground.
The programme fits Sweden’s wider defence posture, which relies on mobility and the ability to operate from dispersed bases in a high-threat environment. For Saab, the effort keeps attention on the Gripen’s core design philosophy at a time when NATO members are reassessing how quickly fighters can be returned to the air after landing.
