Boeing faces fresh labour uncertainty in Seattle after councils representing the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace rejected a tentative contract covering engineers and technical staff. The technicians’ council backed rejection and the professionals’ council failed to reach the 60% threshold needed for a recommendation, leaving the deal to a membership vote that includes strike authorisation.
The dispute covers roughly 17,000 represented workers in western Washington and centres on Boeing’s engineering and technical workforce. Online voting is due to begin on Thursday and close on 21 August. The councils’ move follows a period of frustration over earlier contracts, comparisons with the 2024 IAM 751 agreement and complaints about poor communication during negotiations.
SPEEA’s bargaining team had already endorsed the offer before the council meetings. The tentative agreement followed talks that produced wage increases and other improvements, but the latest internal votes point to significant resistance among members. One report on the professionals’ ballot put opposition at 58%, underscoring the extent of the pushback before the full membership has its say.
