AIN has published a video feature on Sikorsky’s S-97 Raider, filmed at Farnborough, highlighting how the company’s X2 coaxial-rotor concept is aimed at faster and more agile future helicopters. The piece shows the Raider as part of Sikorsky’s continuing effort to position X2 technology for military and other high-performance rotorcraft requirements.
The interview frames the S-97 as the fourth X2 aircraft built, following the original demonstrator, two Raider aircraft and a larger assault variant. Sikorsky describes the platform as a rigid coaxial-rotor helicopter with a pusher propeller designed to reduce retreating-blade stall and extend speed beyond conventional limits.
The aircraft has flown at 160 knots without the propeller installed and reached 210 knots in level flight with it fitted. Sikorsky also points to earlier X2 testing that exceeded 250 knots, underscoring the performance margin the concept is designed to deliver.
The Raider can carry two pilots and up to six passengers or soldiers, and the configuration is presented as suitable for attack, reconnaissance and troop-carrying roles. The feature also makes clear that X2 remains a technology in search of a customer rather than the subject of a new contract, order or delivery announcement.
