Safran Aircraft Engines has initiated full-scale ground testing of its PHILEAS hybrid-electric demonstrator at the Istres site, marking the first validation of dual motor-generators integrated on high- and low-pressure shafts for next-generation narrowbodies. The six-month campaign, comprising nearly 300 hours, will evaluate power balancing, shaft-to-shaft transfer, and engine-aircraft power sharing to validate electrical flux management critical for short- and medium-haul decarbonization. Funded by the DGAC under France 2030, PHILEAS extends Safran’s RISE work with CFM International, shifting from open-fan concepts to a dedicated hybrid-electric prototype scale-1 engine. Flight test dates remain unannounced, while exact motor-generator power output and target aircraft class are unspecified.
