Emirates and Ryanair traded barbs on social media after Ryanair posted a blunt “hate it” reaction to Emirates’ new U-Dream Headrest in economy class. Emirates answered with a legroom dig, turning the exchange into a viral branding skirmish centred on the carrier’s Safran Seats Z400 economy product and its fold-in side wings, vertical adjustment and tilt.
The headrest was unveiled in July as a comfort upgrade for Emirates’ economy cabin and is already fitted on some Airbus A350 aircraft. Emirates plans to install it across its A350 fleet, with retrofits to selected A380s and Boeing 777s due from 2027. The product has been independently tested and certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, and Emirates has positioned it as a world-first.
The online exchange played neatly into the airlines’ contrasting brand identities: Emirates as a premium long-haul operator promoting cabin comfort, and Ryanair as a no-frills carrier known for its own punchy social-media tone. Emirates president Tim Clark featured in the background of the product launch, describing the headrest as designed to support the neck more fully during sleep.
