Russian attacks have damaged about 4,000 of Kyiv’s roughly 12,000 buildings, or nearly one in three, as the capital absorbs the cumulative impact of strikes since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Mayor Vitali Klitschko put the cost of each attack to the city budget at about 500 million hryvnias, or roughly $11.2 million, as officials assess the toll after another deadly overnight assault on the Ukrainian capital.
The latest strike on Thursday killed at least 15 people and damaged residential and civilian infrastructure, including a school and a children’s hospital. The heaviest destruction was reported in Solomianskyi district, where a nine-storey residential block and nearby public facilities were hit.
The damage figure reflects the long-running pressure on Kyiv’s housing stock rather than a single attack, underscoring the scale of repeated damage to the city’s infrastructure and the financial burden on municipal services. Public buildings, homes and essential facilities have all been affected as strikes continue to force emergency repairs and reconstruction across the capital.
