Northrop Grumman’s Talon Blue completes first fully autonomous flight

Northrop Grumman’s YFQ-48A Talon Blue has completed its first fully autonomous flight in Mojave, California, covering taxi, takeoff, manoeuvres and landing without pilot input. The flight, disclosed on 3 October 2026, advances the company’s internally funded Project Talon effort to deliver lower-cost autonomous airpower built for faster production.

The aircraft is positioned as a modular, production-scalable autonomous platform intended to support crewed fighters and compete in the emerging Collaborative Combat Aircraft market. Northrop has framed the design around reduced part count, lower weight and advanced manufacturing methods to improve affordability while preserving mission capability.

The programme draws on the company’s long-running autonomy work, including more than 500,000 autonomous flight hours across its broader portfolio. Lessons from Talon Blue are set to feed into future autonomous systems, while Talon IQ, Northrop’s autonomous testbed activity, underpins the maturation of mission autonomy. The release did not provide flight duration, altitude, speed or other performance details beyond the autonomous taxi-to-landing sequence.
