Lufthansa Group will remain contractually connected to airBaltic as a wet-lease customer, preserving access to Airbus A220-300 aircraft and crews for upcoming timetable periods. The continuation is being addressed in airBaltic’s Chapter 11 restructuring before a court in New York and includes agreements involving Austrian Airlines, while the precise future scope of the cooperation remains confidential.
airBaltic submitted the relevant agreements for court approval on 14 October 2026. Their continuation is linked to restructuring milestones and debtor-in-possession financing, under which the Latvian carrier must preserve or assume specified Lufthansa Group contracts. Lenders have extended the related deadline until 10 November 2026.
Under the latest arrangement, Lufthansa Group airlines could deploy up to 21 airBaltic A220-300s simultaneously during the summer season and up to five in winter. Actual utilisation is expected to depend on airBaltic’s smaller post-restructuring fleet and has not been confirmed. The wet leases provide aircraft, flight crews, maintenance and insurance, allowing Lufthansa Group carriers to add capacity without operating the aircraft directly.
airBaltic is partly owned by Lufthansa, which holds a 10% stake. The parties have not disclosed the continuing agreements’ aircraft allocation, routes, duration or financial terms, and airBaltic declined to comment on the court proceedings.
