Lufthansa Group has launched Starlink-powered onboard internet for the first time, starting with an Airbus A320neo on a Frankfurt-Rome flight on 19 August. The service, branded Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi, is free for Miles & More customers and Travel ID users across travel classes and is being introduced first on selected aircraft before a wider rollout across about 850 aircraft by 2029.
The inaugural flight, operated by the A320neo D-AINM, marked the first aircraft in the Lufthansa Group fleet to enter scheduled service with the new low-Earth-orbit satellite connection. Lufthansa Group chief executive Jens Ritter activated the system during the flight, and the airline plans to extend the service gradually across Lufthansa and other group carriers, including subsidiaries, as aircraft are fitted over time.
The onboard portal will not support voice calls, video calls or live video transmission, but passengers can connect multiple devices. Lufthansa says the service is intended to deliver speeds that can exceed typical home or office connections, strengthening the carrier’s pitch to business travellers and long-haul passengers seeking more productive connectivity in the air.
