Lufthansa is carrying out test flights with a Boeing 747-8 after the aircraft diverted to Brazzaville on 7 August following an undefined smell in the cabin on a Johannesburg-Frankfurt service. The jumbo jet, registered D-ABYO, landed safely after the crew declared an emergency, and all 363 passengers and 16 crew members were unharmed.
The aircraft was later moved into a technical inspection programme before any further service decision. Lufthansa arranged a replacement Boeing 747-8 from Frankfurt to Brazzaville under flight LH9872 to collect the stranded passengers and brought technicians on board to examine the aircraft. The airline has not identified the source of the smell, leaving the exact technical cause unresolved.
The diversion briefly grounded one of Lufthansa’s flagship widebody aircraft on a long-haul route linking southern Africa and Europe, with the operational disruption managed through a recovery flight and overnight accommodation in Brazzaville. The incident also drew attention because emergency procedures were activated over Central Africa, where diversion options are more limited than on many intercontinental trunk routes.
