Joby Aviation has agreed to acquire Dayton, Ohio-based Resonant Sciences for about $500 million, expanding its defence business as the electric air taxi developer broadens beyond commercial eVTOL aircraft. The definitive agreement gives Joby a larger platform in U.S. national security programmes, while Resonant is due to become Joby’s dedicated defence unit after closing, expected in the first half of 2027.
The transaction is structured around about $450 million in cash and $50 million in Joby common stock. Resonant will continue under its current name and remain led by co-founder and chief executive J. Micah North once the deal closes.
Resonant brings more than $100 million in trailing 12-month revenue and about 40% year-on-year growth, alongside an EBITDA-positive business with established government and prime-contractor work. Its capabilities include RF and sensing systems, mission systems, radomes, antenna design and fabrication, and low-observability aircraft design. Joby plans to fold its existing defence initiatives into the new unit while keeping its commercial focus on electric air taxis.
