Jetstar Japan to rebrand as Qantas exits ownership through share buyback

Jetstar Japan will rebrand after a binding ownership restructuring that removes Qantas from the low-cost carrier through a share buyback. The Australian group will sell its 33.32% stake as the Development Bank of Japan joins the shareholder base, while Japan Airlines and Tokyo Century keep their existing holdings. The transition is expected to be completed by June 2027.

The move formalises an earlier plan by Qantas and Japan Airlines to shift Jetstar Japan to a new Japanese capital-led ownership structure. Qantas expects the exit to free up capital for its core operations and to deliver an estimated gain of about AUD115 million, mainly in fiscal 2027. Jetstar Japan, based at Tokyo Narita, faces no expected disruption to flights during the transition, and Qantas and Jetstar services to and from Japan remain unchanged.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals, leaving final completion dependent on the remaining clearance process.
