The Israeli Air Force reopened Squadron 193 at Palmachim Airbase on 28 July 2026 and introduced new Sikorsky SH-60F Seahawk helicopters, locally named Shalach. The squadron replaces the retired AS565 Panther, known as Atalef, and restores a maritime support capability for the Israeli Navy. Its mission covers cooperation with the Missile Boat Flotilla and tasks linked to strategic asset protection, freedom of navigation, manoeuvre support and naval firepower.
The reopening follows the squadron’s shutdown in August 2025 after the retirement of the Panther fleet. It marks a restoration of capability rather than the creation of a new unit. The ceremony formally returned Squadron 193 to service at Palmachim Airbase, where the new helicopter type will operate in the maritime domain.
Three Seahawks have arrived in Israel so far, and two more are expected by the end of 2026. Two of the three aircraft are still undergoing operational integration and flight testing before entering service. The arrival of the new fleet expands Israel’s air-sea maritime helicopter capability and its operational response in the maritime environment.
