Intermountain Health’s medical flight team has reunited in Utah with Estelle Santiago, the toddler it flew home from Uruguay after she became gravely ill abroad. The long-range air ambulance mission covered more than 6,300 miles and took about 18 hours, bringing the child back for treatment and recovery after a cross-border pediatric evacuation.
The family arranged the medical flight after Santiago fell critically ill in a hospital in Uruguay, prompting a rapid response from Intermountain Health’s air medical programme. She is now expected to make a full recovery, and the reunion with the crew took place during a birthday celebration in Utah.
The case highlights the logistical demands of long-haul aeromedical transport, which can require close coordination between the family, the flight team and clinicians on both sides of an international transfer. In this instance, the aircraft completed a one-way rescue mission and later returned to a more personal role, revisiting the child it had carried home alive and improving.
