Typhoon Dolphin forced major flight cancellations at Shanghai’s two main airports on Monday, with Pudong and Hongqiao set to scrap 943 inbound and outbound services as the storm continued to bring heavy rain and strong winds to eastern China. Shanghai airport operators had already absorbed even larger disruption a day earlier, underscoring a significant same-day drop in operational capacity across the city’s aviation network.
Pudong accounted for 642 of the cancellations and Hongqiao for 301, following widespread disruption on Sunday that cut deeply into scheduled movements. State media reported that Shanghai airport capacity fell by nearly 40% as the typhoon weakened but remained powerful enough to affect air travel, rail links and urban transport in the region.
The impact extended beyond Shanghai. Ningbo International Airport in neighbouring Zhejiang prepared to resume operations from midday, although delays and further cancellations remained possible. The cancellations add to a broader run of weather-related disruption across eastern China as carriers and airports work through knock-on effects from the storm.
