Houthi Militants Score Apparent Hit Against Saudi Typhoon

Houthi-affiliated media has released video purporting to show a surface-to-air missile engaging a Royal Saudi Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon over Yemen’s Saada Governorate. The footage appears to capture a proximity detonation near the fighter, with possible damage around its starboard wing and wingtip. The Houthis claimed the aircraft took off from Taif and did not crash, but Saudi Arabia has not confirmed the incident and no independent evidence has established the aircraft’s condition or fate.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the missile struck the Typhoon and left it at risk of crashing. Infrared and ground-level footage shows a flash near an aircraft, although the night imagery does not clearly identify the jet or prove a direct impact. The video also provides no confirmation that the fighter reached a Saudi air base.

The missile type remains unclear. Possible candidates include the Iranian-supplied Barq 1 or Barq 2, or an older Soviet-designed surface-to-air system, but none has been identified with confidence. The reported engagement took place over Houthi-controlled Saada, near the Saudi border, amid renewed hostilities.

If verified, the incident would be the first known case of a Eurofighter Typhoon sustaining notable hostile fire in flight. For now, however, the event remains an unconfirmed Houthi claim, with no reported wreckage or official Saudi acknowledgement of a hit, damage or loss.
