FlightAware has sued Kalshi in federal court in New York, accusing the prediction-market operator of using its data, name and branding without permission to settle contracts tied to flight cancellations. The complaint centres on contracts linked to weekly flight disruptions and alleges that Kalshi continued to offer the markets after being asked to stop.
The dispute involves contracts that Kalshi launched in July and that were still listed on its platform at the time of reporting. FlightAware alleges the operator identified it as the verification source for settlement, including a contract covering US flight cancellations for the week ending 5pm EDT on 14 August, with the page stating that the outcome would be verified from FlightAware.
FlightAware is seeking unspecified damages and court orders to block further use of its data and brand in the contracts. The case also highlights wider concerns over prediction markets tied to flight cancellations, a format that has drawn criticism over possible safety and disruption incentives.
