Ethiopian Airlines orders 10 Boeing freighters to expand cargo fleet

Ethiopian Airlines has ordered eight Boeing 777-8 Freighters and two 777 Freighters to expand its cargo fleet and strengthen capacity across its global network. The deal makes the carrier the first African airline to order the 777-8 Freighter and extends its 777X-family commitment, following an earlier order for eight 777-9 passenger jets.

The new aircraft will support Ethiopian Cargo’s operations in more than 70 freight markets across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America. The airline currently operates 12 777 Freighters, two 767 Freighters and four 737-800SF aircraft.

Boeing says the 777-8 Freighter has a maximum structural payload of 118 tonnes and is designed to cut fuel burn and operating cost per tonne while opening new cargo markets. Reuters reported that the two current-generation 777 Freighters are expected earlier than the 777-8Fs, which are scheduled for delivery much later, around 2033 to 2035. Ethiopian Airlines also has purchase rights for up to eight additional 777-8Fs, according to Reuters.
