Lufthansa Group has begun rolling out Starlink-based in-flight internet with an Airbus A320neo from the Lufthansa mainline fleet becoming the first aircraft equipped with the service. Branded Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi, the system is being introduced across roughly 850 aircraft in the group and its subsidiaries, with completion targeted for 2029. Free access will be offered to Miles & More members and Travel ID users in all travel classes.
The programme uses SpaceX’s low-Earth-orbit Starlink network and places Lufthansa Group among the first major European airline groups to deploy satellite broadband on this scale. The first aircraft is operating from Frankfurt, although the inaugural route has not been disclosed in available coverage. The new service is intended to support streaming, cloud-based work and other data-heavy uses, replacing the older FlyNet-style onboard internet experience.
A commercial element sits at the centre of the launch: Lufthansa is linking complimentary access to its loyalty and digital identity platforms, a move likely to encourage more passengers to register for Miles & More or Travel ID. Mastercard is also named in some coverage as a sponsor of the offering, while the pricing and access terms for non-eligible users have not been fully detailed.
