Dubai International Airport completes drone-protection cages around fuel tanks

The United Arab Emirates has completed massive metal cage-like protective structures around fuel storage tanks near Dubai International Airport, in a move designed to reduce vulnerability to drone attack. The passive defences, built on the outskirts of the airport, form a last-layer barrier around critical fuel infrastructure serving one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs.

Recent imagery and reporting indicate the works were finished after roughly four months of construction, with the project beginning around May 2026. The structures are intended to increase stand-off protection against one-way attack drones, following earlier strikes that exposed the exposure of airport-adjacent fuel assets. Similar hardening measures have also been reported around fuel infrastructure in Abu Dhabi, pointing to a broader security push across sensitive energy and aviation sites in the UAE.

The focus on physical protection reflects a shift toward passive counter-drone measures for infrastructure that cannot easily be relocated. For airport operators, fuel suppliers and security teams, the Dubai project highlights how major aviation gateways are adapting to aerial threats without interrupting fuel storage and distribution capacity.
