Bundespolizei has installed a new watch post with special radar at Leipzig/Halle Airport to detect and track drones at longer range after a drone carrying explosives was found at the German cargo hub earlier in the week. The equipment, believed to be an EchoShield radar system, has been placed on the visitor platform of the old tower as part of an immediate security response at one of Germany’s most important air-freight airports.
The new post is designed to identify approaching unmanned aircraft earlier and follow their flight paths in real time. Bundespolizei has not disclosed technical details, citing operational security, and airport authorities have not publicly commented on the system. The move comes amid heightened concern over drone activity around sensitive infrastructure in Germany, with the Leipzig/Halle case prompting a rapid upgrade in counter-drone monitoring.
The airport is a major logistics gateway for cargo traffic, making airspace protection a priority for police and aviation security authorities.
