ATR has identified 209 domestic air routes in Indonesia that could be economically viable with regional turboprop aircraft, pointing to potential demand of about 16 million passengers a year. The analysis highlights opportunities across the archipelago, especially outside Java, as Indonesia’s existing airport network leaves room for new services without major new runway construction.
ATR’s MobilityMonitor platform examined travel patterns from 35 million Indonesian residents and matched city-pair demand against current airport infrastructure. It found that 70 of the country’s 180 paved-runway airports have no scheduled passenger service, suggesting latent connectivity between secondary cities and islands that could support short regional operations.
Of the identified routes, 88% are intra-island links, representing about 14 million passengers a year, while 90% lie on islands other than Java. Sumatra and Sulawesi emerged as the strongest markets in the analysis, underlining the scale of untapped domestic demand for turboprop services in Indonesia’s regional aviation sector.
