Typhoon Champi Disrupts Taiwan Flights

Typhoon Champi disrupted Taiwan’s air services on Thursday, with 125 flights cancelled as the storm approached from the southeast. China Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan suspended several Taiwan–Okinawa services, while Uni Air and Mandarin Airlines cancelled or adjusted domestic flights to offshore islands including Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu. Taiwan’s main airport infrastructure remained operational, but further rolling changes were expected through 24 October.

China Airlines cancelled flights from Taoyuan, Taichung and Kaohsiung to Okinawa, while bringing forward some Taichung–Okinawa services. Tigerair Taiwan also cancelled multiple flights linking Taiwan with Okinawa, Taoyuan, Kaohsiung, Taichung and Tainan.

Mandarin Airlines’ disruption list included services from Songshan, Taichung and Kaohsiung to Kinmen, Penghu and Taitung. The cancellations were concentrated on domestic routes, although the wider regional impact extended into Japan, where more than 200 flights were reported cancelled across the affected area.

Starlux Airlines and EVA Air had not reported broad cancellations at the time of the initial notices, but warned that Taiwan–Japan flights could change as Champi’s track developed. Passengers were advised to check flight status before travelling, with conditions expected to affect schedules as the typhoon moved towards Taiwan’s eastern and northern waters.
