A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D crashed near Rogéville, northwest of Nancy, late on 20 October while returning from a night training mission. The aircraft, assigned to Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne” at Nancy-Ochey Air Base, carried a pilot and a weapons systems officer. One body was recovered, while search teams continued looking for the second crew member.
The crash occurred in Meurthe-et-Moselle, between Rogéville, Domèvre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt. The aircraft lost radio and radar contact with its base during the return flight. Debris was located by drone, and military and civilian firefighters, gendarmes and other search personnel were deployed to the site.
Darkness, fog and poor weather complicated overnight helicopter operations. Local officials reported an explosion and fireball, but the circumstances of the accident remained unresolved.
The French authorities opened aviation-safety and judicial investigations. The identity of the recovered crew member, the status of the second airman and the cause of the crash had not been established in the latest update.
The two-seat Mirage 2000D is a supersonic strike aircraft designed primarily for air-to-ground missions.
