The FAA has proposed a Special Air Traffic Rules area around President Donald J. Trump International Airport (KDJT), formerly Palm Beach International Airport, in Florida. Requested by the U.S. Secret Service on national-security grounds, the framework would require aircraft using or transiting the affected airspace to meet specified flight-plan, communications, authorisation and transponder requirements when a temporary flight restriction is not active.
When a TFR is in force, operators would have to comply with the applicable NOTAM restrictions. At other times, arrivals and departures would generally need an active IFR or VFR flight plan, an approved instrument approach, an ATC-assigned departure procedure or radar vectors. Aircraft would also need two-way radio contact with ATC, permission to enter the airspace and a discrete transponder code.
Exempt or specially authorised operations could include military flights supporting the Secret Service or the president, law-enforcement, firefighting and air-ambulance missions, as well as other flights approved by ATC for flight safety or the protection of people and property on the ground.
The proposal follows temporary restrictions introduced in September 2025 and an FAA special-security flight restriction issued the following month as an interim measure. Separately, the Secret Service requested a permanent restriction around the nearby Mar-a-Lago Club, citing adverse threat intelligence. The FAA has extended existing Mar-a-Lago restrictions through 20 October 2027. The proposal’s final boundaries, effective date and implementation timetable remain undecided.
