Lufthansa schedules final A340-600 passenger flight

Lufthansa is scheduled to operate its final Airbus A340-600 passenger service on 18 October, ending nearly 23 years of operation of the four-engine widebody. Flight LH419 is due to depart Washington Dulles International Airport at 17:55 local time and arrive in Frankfurt at 07:55 on 19 October, concluding the type’s regular passenger service with the German airline.

Four A340-600s remained in Lufthansa’s fleet during the final phase of the programme, operating mainly on transatlantic routes from Frankfurt to Washington Dulles and New York JFK. The airline had initially scheduled the aircraft through 24 October but brought forward the end of operations to 18 October.

Lufthansa received 24 A340-600s between 2003 and 2008. Their retirement forms part of the carrier’s long-haul fleet modernisation and cost-reduction programme, as the four-engine aircraft are more expensive to operate than newer twin-engine widebodies. The phase-out also reflects the wider industry shift away from large four-engine passenger aircraft.

Following LH419’s scheduled arrival, Lufthansa will no longer operate the A340-600 in regular passenger service. The smaller A340-300 will remain in the fleet for the time being, with its retirement reportedly planned for 2027. The final aircraft assignment and any ceremonial activity remained subject to operational changes.
