Spain is considering the purchase of 15 additional Hürjet advanced trainer aircraft from Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), potentially expanding its planned fleet from 30 to 45 aircraft. TAI chief executive Mehmet Demiroğlu disclosed the plan during an event in Kastamonu, Türkiye. Deliveries under Spain’s existing 30-aircraft agreement are expected to begin in 2028, although the additional aircraft have not yet been formally contracted.
The Hürjet forms the basis of Spain’s Saeta II advanced military-pilot training programme, which is intended to replace the Spanish Air and Space Force’s F-5 training fleet. The programme also includes aircraft adaptation, training infrastructure, simulation and Spanish industrial participation.
Demiroğlu’s comments indicate interest in expanding the programme, but do not establish a contract, approval timetable or signing date for the additional 15 aircraft. No separate delivery schedule, price or industrial terms have been disclosed. If formalised, the addition would increase the aircraft element of the Spanish programme by 50% and create further work for companies involved in the national adaptation and support system.
