Torrential rain cancels 385 Barcelona flights over weekend

Barcelona-El Prat Airport was hit by torrential rain over the weekend of 3-4 October, with 385 flights cancelled as storms across Catalonia disrupted arrivals and departures. Civil Protection figures shared with EFE put the total at 220 cancellations on Saturday and 165 on Sunday, while flight-tracking data showed widespread delays in addition to the cancellations.

Aena received airline reports of about 200 cancellations on Sunday, but it did not provide a full airport-wide total for Saturday or confirm how many cancellations were directly weather-related. The disruption came as flooding and severe weather caused wider transport chaos in Catalonia, including fatalities in the region.

Rainfall near the airport reached 80.3 litres per square metre on Saturday, almost twice the amount recorded in the earlier storm that hit the area on Tuesday. The figures varied by source, but all pointed to significant operational strain at one of Spain’s busiest airports, with airlines and passengers facing knock-on scheduling pressure throughout the weekend.
