Kepplair Evolution has begun flight tests on its first ATR 72 prototype in Toulouse as it launches the KEPPLAIR 72 water-bomber programme. The aircraft, based on an ATR 72-200/72-212F, completed two pre-modification flights before being grounded for conversion into a firefighting platform equipped with Kepplair’s KEDS drop system. Aerotec & Concept is carrying out the modification work in Toulouse, with a return to flight in firefighting configuration targeted for January 2027.
The programme is aimed at EASA Supplemental Type Certificate approval in 2027, with later certification work for other authorities also envisaged. Kepplair is positioning the aircraft as a multi-role platform, with firefighting as the primary mission and transport or medical-evacuation use also under consideration.
The prototype’s first flights took place in late August and on 1 September before the conversion phase began. The start of testing provides the first visible step in a programme that remains focused on certification and configuration work rather than a customer delivery or operational launch.
