Kepplair targets 2027 certification for ATR 72 firefighting conversion

Kepplair Evolution has begun work on converting its first ATR 72 prototype into a firefighting aircraft in Toulouse, with pre-modification flight testing underway and in-flight drop tests scheduled to start in January 2027. The French company is targeting EASA certification in 2027 for the KEPPLAIR 72 programme, which uses the ATR 72 platform and the KEDS drop system for civil protection missions.

The prototype has reached the test phase before physical conversion at Toulouse-Blagnac, where Aerotec & Concept is handling the modification and certification work. The aircraft is expected to undergo structural changes, drop-system installation and subsequent flight testing over the coming months.

Kepplair is positioning the aircraft as a multi-role platform rather than a single-use water-bomber, with potential applications in medical evacuation and cargo transport. The project is aimed at a European market facing tighter firefighting capacity, and a successful certification path could also support future approval for North American operations.
