Air China began operating the COMAC C919 on a scheduled passenger service between Beijing Capital and Ulaanbaatar on 12 August, giving the Chinese narrowbody its first regular international commercial route since entering service in 2023. The daily round trip is operated by Air China and links the Chinese capital with Mongolia’s main airport, extending the aircraft’s use beyond domestic routes.
The service adds an overseas deployment to a programme that has so far been built around domestic operations. The Beijing–Ulaanbaatar sector is short-haul, which keeps operational requirements relatively manageable while still providing a visible test of the jet’s cross-border commercial use. Beijing customs introduced expedited parts-clearance and tailored supervision procedures to support the operation.
For COMAC, the route offers a practical step in the C919’s internationalisation, but it does not by itself address the longer-term question facing the programme: how quickly production can scale to support broader airline demand. Air China already has the aircraft in domestic service, and the Mongolia route is the first regular passenger flight for the type outside China.
