Atran Airlines moves closer to cargo comeback after Boeing 737-400SF test flight

Atran Airlines is moving toward a return to service after more than four years on the ground, with its first Boeing 737-400SF freighter completing a technical flight on 28 August. The Russian cargo carrier is preparing to resume domestic and international freight operations in the near term, after restoring the maintenance and crew certifications needed to bring the aircraft back into service.

The airline has kept flight and engineering staff during the shutdown, helping speed up the recovery process. Further aircraft of the same type are expected to follow later, while a full operational restoration is planned by the end of 2026.

Details of the technical flight were kept limited for operational-security reasons, and specific routes or schedules have not yet been disclosed. Atran’s fleet includes several Boeing 737-400SF aircraft, giving it a potential base for rebuilding cargo capacity as Russian freight demand continues to adjust to a constrained market environment.
