United Airlines will introduce its Airbus A321XLR on two domestic routes from Washington Dulles before sending the long-range narrowbody into international service. The aircraft is scheduled to operate from Dulles to San Diego from 9 September and from Dulles to Los Angeles from 1 October, with both routes currently planned through 30 November.
The initial assignments give United a domestic proving ground for the A321XLR on premium transcontinental flying ahead of its first overseas rotations. The carrier plans to switch the type to Washington Dulles–Amsterdam and Washington Dulles–Dublin on 1 December, turning the jet towards its transatlantic mission just weeks after its US debut.
The rollout also fits United’s wider strategy for the aircraft, which is expected to underpin high-demand routes with a more premium narrowbody configuration. The A321XLR will later support additional European services as the airline expands its long-haul narrowbody network in 2027.
