Louisiana launches LIFTOff programme for electric aircraft and cargo drones at Houma-Terrebonne Airport

Louisiana has launched LIFTOff Louisiana at Houma-Terrebonne Airport, beginning a multi-year FAA-backed programme to test electric aircraft, autonomous cargo drones and other advanced air mobility platforms. The initiative brings together the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the FAA and industry partners including BETA Technologies, Elroy Air, Bristow Group and Metro Aviation, with early operations focused on cargo and personnel transport to offshore and coastal energy sites.

Houma-Terrebonne Airport will serve as the central test location because of its heavy helicopter activity and its proximity to offshore oil and gas operations along the Gulf Coast. The programme is among eight FAA demonstration efforts and is due to run for at least three years. Its data-gathering role is designed to support FAA integration of new aircraft into the National Airspace System, while related work at the airport has already begun on supporting facilities.

The initial test missions are expected to examine how electric and autonomous aircraft can operate alongside crewed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft in routine energy-sector logistics. That operational environment gives the programme a practical setting for evaluating cargo drones, electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and other emerging platforms under real-world conditions.
