AirAsia X will suspend its Sydney-Kuala Lumpur service from 25 October 2026 and redeploy the aircraft to stronger Australian routes, increasing capacity on Melbourne-Kuala Lumpur and Perth-Kuala Lumpur while also lifting Perth-Denpasar frequencies. The move ends a low-cost widebody link that has operated since 2012 and comes as the airline rebalances its long-haul network around higher-demand, commercially stronger markets.
The Kuala Lumpur-based carrier cited higher operating costs, softer passenger demand and the need to align its fleet with viable routes. Perth-Kuala Lumpur will rise to 14 weekly flights, Melbourne-Kuala Lumpur will return to daily service, and Perth-Denpasar will increase to 35 weekly flights from December. AirAsia X also kept open the option of returning to Sydney if market conditions improve and fleet plans allow.
Sydney’s loss of the route removes one of the more visible long-haul low-cost options between Australia and Malaysia, while Melbourne and Perth gain additional capacity. The changes underline a broader industry pattern in which long-haul low-cost airlines are trimming weaker trunk services and concentrating aircraft where load factors and yields are more resilient.
