A short but violent storm hit Forlì Airport in northern Italy on Friday, damaging parked aircraft and airport structures, including two Boeing 737-800s and several light planes. Severe gusts of 100 to 120 km/h tore through the site for about ten minutes, leaving winglet and auxiliary power unit damage on the 737s and overturning at least one Tecnam P2008.
The weather event also affected a hangar wall and other infrastructure at the regional airport, where heavy rain accompanied the wind. Four light aircraft were reported damaged in total, while no injuries were reported. The incident underlines the vulnerability of parked aircraft and ground equipment at regional airports when intense localised storms strike with little warning.
