Lufthansa and American expand narrowbody cabins with Starlink and premium refreshes

Lufthansa has started Starlink-powered Wi-Fi on its first A320neo, while American Airlines is overhauling its narrowbody fleet with more premium seating, 4K seatback screens, Bluetooth audio, USB-C charging and Starlink from 2027. The parallel moves underline how single-aisle cabins are becoming a key battleground for connectivity and onboard product in 2026 and 2027.

Lufthansa’s first Starlink-equipped passenger flight operated between Frankfurt and Rome, with the A320neo leading a rollout that will extend across the group’s fleet. The service is free for Miles & More and Travel ID users in all cabin classes, and the airline plans to fit up to ten more A320-family aircraft at Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines by the end of 2026 before expanding much further through 2029.

American’s plan reverses its earlier screen-free narrowbody strategy and adds a fuller domestic premium proposition. New Boeing and Airbus narrowbody deliveries will begin arriving with 4K screens from 2028, while existing aircraft will be retrofitted through the early 2030s. Premium seating is set to rise from about 25% to about 40% of the narrowbody cabin, with more First Class and Main Cabin Extra seats as the carrier prepares to install Starlink on more than 500 aircraft starting next year.
