Leuchars Aerodrome in Fife has ended private jet landings after its primary and secondary radar systems were withdrawn from service on 1 July 2026. The RAF facility remains open for military operations, but civilian aircraft can no longer use it, removing a long-standing arrival option for business and private aviation in eastern Scotland.
The change followed the end of the Lower Airspace Radar Service at Leuchars and was planned in advance with airspace stakeholders. Military air traffic control across Scotland is unaffected, while the small number of private flights that previously used the aerodrome are being directed to alternative locations. Dundee Airport is the nearest established civilian alternative for travellers heading to St Andrews and the surrounding area.
Leuchars has long served visiting private aircraft, including flights linked to St Andrews, and officials previously confirmed that 100 private aircraft landed there during the relevant period. The airfield continues to operate as a fully functional military base, with the civilian access change taking effect at the start of July and becoming public later in August.
