Electra has conducted hybrid-electric demonstration flights under the FAA’s eIPP programme, using its EL2 Goldfinch demonstrator to connect small airports with major hubs in Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The route linked Manassas with Washington Manassas Airport, Millville Executive Airport, Atlantic City Bader Field, Northeast Philadelphia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport, in a series of tests centred on short-haul regional travel rather than commercial service.
The flights took place with support from the FAA and transportation agencies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey as part of efforts to validate advanced air mobility operations in the national airspace. Electra is using the Goldfinch to support development of its EL9 Ultra Short hybrid-electric regional aircraft concept, which is intended to operate from underused local fields and cut ground-travel time on trips of roughly 50 to 500 miles.
The programme remains a demonstration campaign, and no operating timetable, customer launch date or airline partnership has been confirmed. The tests are part of a broader push to assess how hybrid-electric eSTOL aircraft could create new regional links without requiring traditional runway infrastructure.
