Airbus begins Belfast A220 wing-facility expansion for 2028 output ramp-up

Airbus has started work on a major expansion of its Belfast A220 wing facility, with completion planned for the first half of 2028 as the company prepares for production of 13 aircraft a month by then. The project will add 67,000 sq ft to the Northern Ireland site and includes a third autoclave, new tooling and upgraded support infrastructure for the composite wing operation.

The Belfast plant is the sole global source of A220 wings, making the expansion central to Airbus’s production plans for the programme. Broader site upgrades are also included, covering security, power supply, parking and IT systems, alongside improvements intended to support additional recruitment. The investment forms part of a wider multi-million-pound site upgrade programme as Airbus readies the facility for higher-rate output over the next two years.
