A Lufthansa Airbus A380 operating flight LH459 from San Francisco to Munich touched down before the runway threshold at Munich Airport on 17 August, damaging runway lighting but landing safely with all 351 passengers unharmed. The aircraft, registered D-AIML, remained on the ground in Munich after the incident, while the cause had not yet been established.
The landing occurred on runway 26L and led to an investigation by Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, which took the flight recorders. Some reports also said several tyres were damaged. Lufthansa confirmed the event and no injuries were reported as the aircraft taxied to the apron.
The incident comes only days after a separate runway event in Munich involving a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9, intensifying scrutiny of runway safety at the airport. Weather may have played a role, though the available reports did not identify a definitive cause.
