One aircraft was arriving from Chicago O’Hare while the other was departing Phoenix for Chicago, after a delay on the inbound sector prompted the carrier to use a different aircraft for the return flight.
The controller identified the aircraft as “on the arrival” and “on the departure” to keep them separate on the same frequency. The FAA has opened an investigation, while American Airlines is reviewing the details and has praised the controller and flight crews for their response. Both flights continued safely and without incident.
The case highlights a rare scheduling and operational overlap rather than a collision event.
