Vietnam Airlines’ Boeing 787-9 operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi overran the runway during takeoff from Munich Airport on 15 August, struck its tail and later returned safely to the airport, with no injuries reported. The aircraft, registered VN-A867, had rotated very late on runway 26L before climbing away and entering a holding pattern to burn fuel ahead of a precautionary landing on runway 26R.
The Dreamliner remained airborne for around two hours before returning to Munich, where it landed under control and was later found to have suffered tyre damage. Reports indicate the aircraft became disabled on or near the taxiway after landing, contributing to a runway closure while the scene was secured and inspected.
The exact cause has not been established. Vietnam Airlines described the event as a technical problem and is coordinating with authorities as the aircraft undergoes inspection. Secondary aviation reporting has also pointed to possible damage to runway lighting or equipment beyond the runway end, but those details have not yet been formally confirmed.
