Airlines diverted and cancelled multiple services, with some flights rerouted to Palermo and Comiso, while passengers faced delays and overnight disruption. The operational impact was significant at a time of heavy seasonal demand.
Safety concerns drove the decision, with ash making continued operations unsafe and impractical for aircraft using the airport. Travellers were advised to check flight status with their airline before heading to the terminal, as reopening times remained uncertain amid the ongoing volcanic activity.
