Swissport Tanzania has opened a new temperature-controlled cargo facility at Kilimanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania, expanding cold-chain capacity for horticultural exports and other perishable goods. The warehouse is designed to handle temperature-sensitive cargo for exporters, airlines and freight forwarders, and to improve throughput at one of the country’s main airfreight gateways.
The facility can store about 30 containers of vegetables, flowers, fruit and meat before export and can service five cargo aircraft at the same time. It is intended to support Tanzanian produce shipments to European markets, where strict temperature control is critical for maintaining quality and shelf life.
The upgrade replaces KIA’s previous cargo facility, which had been in use since 1998, and adds infrastructure tailored to the handling of perishables. The site covers 630 square metres and includes four temperature-controlled chillers and one freezer, along with digital cargo tracking, mobile scanning and energy-efficient systems.
