Melbourne Airport has released a draft master plan setting out its growth strategy through 2047, with the airport targeting capacity for 75 million annual passengers, almost double the nearly 37 million handled in the last financial year. The 20-year plan covers terminal expansion, road and bus access, rail integration and airfield development, including formal recognition of the Eastern Extension Project linked to a third runway.
The draft allocates A$4.5 billion for privately funded expansion of the international terminal, alongside upgrades to domestic terminals and new road infrastructure. It also includes improved local bus services and provision for the planned airport rail link via Sunshine, part of wider transport planning around the airport.
Melbourne Airport has opened the draft for public feedback during the consultation period. Its materials describe the document as a preliminary plan for how the airport could evolve over the next two decades, spanning future terminals, aircraft operations, sustainability and connectivity.
