U.S. officials believe the explosive-laden drone found at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany likely belongs to the Russian government, according to the Wall Street Journal. The device was discovered near Ukrainian cargo aircraft on the apron, prompting a German investigation and brief operational disruption at one of the country’s key air freight hubs.
German police and bomb-disposal specialists secured and defused the device after it was spotted during the night of 5-6 August. German officials have described the case as a possible attack by foreign powers, while public attribution to Russia has not been made by Berlin. Russian officials have denied responsibility.
The incident has sharpened concern over airport security and the vulnerability of cargo operations linked to Ukraine. German reporting has indicated the explosive material tested positive for military-use substances including Semtex and PETN, reinforcing the view that the drone carried a serious sabotage risk.
