The Bundespolizei is warning drone pilots that Frankfurt Airport and its surrounding airspace are under active surveillance for unauthorised aircraft. The police reminder, delivered through a public video message, underscores that breaches of the restricted zone around Germany’s largest airport can trigger criminal or administrative penalties.
The warning covers the airport perimeter and nearby municipalities including Kelsterbach, Mörfelden-Walldorf and Flörsheim, where drone restrictions also apply. Police describe the area as part of a broader security posture for critical infrastructure, with the monitoring in place since last year and aimed at catching drones that hobby users may not realise are entering protected airspace.
Frankfurt has emerged as a key reference point for airport anti-drone operations in Germany. Aero.de reported that a detection system has been installed since the previous autumn and has already identified several drones in prohibited airspace, including an early case involving a man detained near the airport fence after a test flight. Government information also places Frankfurt among the airports where the Bundespolizei is responsible for drone defence, alongside a national drone-defence unit established in December 2025.
