Australia, the United States and Japan have formalised a new trilateral air logistics framework to deepen cooperation across their air forces. Senior logistics representatives signed Terms of Reference at Defence Establishment Fairbairn in Canberra, creating the Trilateral Air Logistics Coordination Organization to improve interoperability, sustainment, resilience and planning for coalition air operations.
The agreement was signed by RAAF Air Commodore Natasia Pulford, USAF Maj. Gen. Elizabeth Arledge and JASDF Maj. Gen. Kunihiro Fujinaga. It establishes a standing coordination body rather than a one-off exercise arrangement, giving the three forces a formal mechanism for aligning logistics processes and support requirements.
The framework builds on earlier trilateral arrangements, including an information-sharing agreement and a memorandum of intent signed in June 2024. It is also expected to support future exercises, including Exercise Southern Cross, which is moving towards a biennial format under RAAF hosting.
For defence aviation operators, the practical value lies in more efficient coordination of fuel, equipment and support resources across the three partners. That should help reduce friction in combined deployments and improve readiness for Indo-Pacific air operations where sustainment and rapid logistics integration are critical.
