Washington Dulles International Airport will undergo a more than $20 billion capital transformation under a long-term programme backed by the US Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and United Airlines. The phased redevelopment is designed to turn the Virginia hub into a world-class international gateway while keeping the airport operating throughout the work.
The plan covers more than 5 million square feet of new or renovated space, including modernised concourses, an expanded main terminal and improved walking access to gates. It also calls for a new passenger train system to replace the airport’s mobile-lounge concept, a change aimed at speeding transfers across the sprawling campus.
Financing is expected to come through municipal bonds, with possible public-private partnership elements. The project builds on existing work at Dulles, where the first segment of the new Concourse E is due to open later this year with 14 new United gates. The overhaul is intended to support thousands of jobs, generate billions in economic activity and open the way for hundreds of additional flights.
